Will Young India be Able to Whitewash Sri Lanka?

November 11 12:58 2014

rayuduNew Delhi, Tuesday, November 11 – When Sri Lankan cricketers confirmed as the substitute opposition for a series against the ‘men in blue’ when West Indies called off their tour to India in the midway last month, none expected they would succumb so easily in opposition to Virat Kohli led team India.

Kohli who held the fort in the first 3 one-dayers as Captain Cool Dhoni was rested will now lead the same quad for the last two 50-50 over matches against Sri Lanka that are slated to happen at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Thursday, November 13 and JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi, on Sunday, November 16.

Defeating the close rivals in the earlier three games, confidence of Indian cricketers is certainly high. The 5-match series has been great so far for Shikhar Dhawan, who made optimal use of the opportunity by accumulating several runs. A ton and fifty-plus scores attained twice by him surely boosted self-assurance in the 28-year-old batsman. This is the reason why he has been given rest in the remaining two matches and Robin Uthappa has been given a much-needed break to perform at his best and gain momentum for future contests.

The dynamic player Rohit Sharma, who has been out of the team for more than several months due to injury, has made his way back into the Indian ‘playing XI’. In view of the fact that India have got an unbeatable lead of 3-0 up till now, the expectations are up from the Indian team. Cricket fans wonder whether Kohli’s captaincy will help his squad anticipate a whitewash opposite to Sri Lanka, who were considered stronger opponents keeping in mind the kind of show they presented in the past.

It is not possible for anyone how Sri Lankan team stood against India in close contests and made them stay a tad far away to taste victory. But at the same time, it is not easy to keep aside the fact that it was Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s group which inflicted a defeat on them during the Cricket World Cup Finals in 2011. The tournaments which have been lined-up to take place prior to the upcoming cricket carnival next year are of huge importance, especially when the prime motto is to make Indian team have faith in their capabilities.

Skipper Kohli, the man of big innings Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, talented Ambati Rayudu, Suresh Raina – a player with strong batting & bowling style, Uthappa, Akshar Patel, Karn Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, all-rounder Stuart Binny, Vinay Kumar, Kedar Jadhav and Dhawal Kulkarni are supposed to create magic on the field. Team efforts would be pivotal if pressure is to be built on Sri Lanka right from the beginning. The neighbors are likely to face more trouble as Kumar Sangakkara, Dhammika Prasad, Suraj Randiv and Upul Tharanga will be back home and replaced by the players who have the capability to change the entire game by individual show.

With two more days to go for next ODI to start, Sri Lankan supporters wish their team to bounce back and steer clear of humiliating defeat vs. India. But eye can’t be taken of the truth that it is never easy for any team to thrash India on their soil. The outcome of the 4th ODI will curiously be noticed as it would decide whether India take a 4-0 lead or Sri Lanka pocket a victory, demonstrate their ability to set a difficult target and save the game at the end.
